A few minutes ago, I received a fraudulent email claiming to be from Citibank. The subject line was "Account Data Confirmation."
How did I know it was fraudulent?
I DON'T HAVE A BANK ACCOUNT WITH CITIBANK.
And, THE EMAIL ADDRESS IS Citi [gxitwd@yahoo.com] --
NOT A CITIBANK EMAIL ADDRESS.
We all get fraudulent or spoof emails, but we don't have to take the bait. Like this message, if you read the actual email address, you will see if it has the "real" company name. Some of these spoofers are clever and rig a similar email address to the actual company, so don't do business via email unless you KNOW that it is the real company. ALWAYS confirm first by calling the company -- don't respond to the message.
Also, make sure it's a company you actually do business with; you'd be surprised how many of these guys trick people who aren't even customers of the company they are spoofing.
Finally, if you know you have a fraudulent message, check the "real" company's website and find out how to report it. Citibank's email for reporting fraud is: emailspoof@citigroup.com
Be a savvy consumer -- don't let spoofers steal your money or your information!
